Maybe You Recognize Yourself in One of These Stories…

Grief That Catches You Off Guard

A woman sitting in a window seat holding a cushion, looking away, rain on the glass
Marta

Marta* lost someone she loved deeply, and now everything feels different.

She’s making coffee, folding laundry, catching sight of a familiar photo, and a wave of sadness arrives without warning. She keeps going because that’s what you do. But the grief is heavy to carry by herself.

She misses the person she lost. She longs for life to feel settled again.

More than anything, she wants a place where her grief can be understood and held with care, so the loss doesn’t quietly take over every part of her days.

The Past That Won't Stay in the Past

A man with glasses resting his hand at his chin, looking past the camera
Jonah

Jonah* looks calm on the outside as he handles everything life throws his way.

Inside, he still carries what happened to him as a child. A certain sound, a moment of conflict, a stretch of stress, and the old fear floods back. He tenses up and drifts out of the room he’s standing in.

He’s spent years pushing through, but it keeps finding its way in.

He wants to feel safer in his own body, and he’s looking for a trauma-informed space where EMDR can help him process the painful experiences of his past.

Caring for Everyone but Yourself

A woman at a desk with her glasses off, pinching the bridge of her nose
Elena

Elena* is holding it all together. Aging parents. Her own family. Her job.

The appointments, the decisions, the emotional needs that keep landing on her plate. She’s careful not to let anyone down, and the cost of that care is starting to show.

She’s worn thin, and she feels guilty for even wanting room to breathe.

What she needs is balance. Boundaries. A way to keep caring for the people she loves without disappearing inside it.

The Same Argument on Repeat

A man in the foreground looking at the camera with a woman out of focus behind him
Avery & Sam

Avery* and Sam* still love each other.

Lately, though, their relationship keeps landing in the same painful patterns. A small disagreement becomes a bigger one. Both walk away feeling unheard, defensive, and far apart. What used to come easily now feels like effort.

They want to rebuild trust and hear each other again.

They’re looking for help understanding what keeps pulling them into the cycle, so they can build something stronger and more secure together.

Whatever Brought You Here, There's a Way Forward

If you saw a piece of yourself in any of those stories,
you're in the right place.

What you're feeling makes sense. When trauma, grief, or a major life change shakes your footing, the old ways of coping stop working, and it's hard to find your bearings on your own. There's a reason for all of it, and there's a way through.

I've sat with people in every one of these moments.
I've also lived a few of them.
Healing happens when you feel truly seen, supported, and free to move at a pace that feels safe to you.

Hi, I'm Tammy.

Tammy Rife, LMHC, smiling, with a warm blurred cityscape behind her
Tammy Rife, LMHC EMDRIA-Trained EMDR Therapist

I'm the founder of Finding North Counseling, and I work with adults moving through trauma, grief, caregiving stress, addictive behaviors, and the hard transitions that come with a life in motion.

Part of why I do this work is that I found my own way through counseling, by going to counseling. There was a time when things came apart and left me confused, alone, and on the far side of addiction. With therapy, support, and a lot of honest effort, I found a version of myself I genuinely love today. If my story helps you feel less alone in yours, that’s a bridge I’m glad to stand on with you.

My approach is warm and grounded, with practical guidance and a touch of humor to keep things human. I draw on EMDR, a brain-based method that helps distressing memories lose their grip, along with cognitive-behavioral strategies, mindfulness, and trauma-informed care that follows your pace and your choices. With couples, I use the Gottman approach to break the argument cycle, repair after conflict, and rebuild closeness.

What We’ll Do Together

Together, we’ll make sense of what you’re feeling, name your inner strengths, and build real tools you can use when life gets loud. My role is to walk alongside you while you heal, grow, and reclaim your direction.

Outside the therapy hour, you’ll usually find me with my two dogs, Frosty and Merlot, crocheting something half-finished, or back out running for the shiny medals at the end. My motto says it best: “Your journey, our support. A steady path to healing.”

More About Me

Where These Stories Go Next

Marta

Marta still misses the person she lost.

The difference is that her grief no longer runs the day. She can sit with a photo and feel love before she feels the ache.

She’s steadier now, more connected to her own life, holding the memory close instead of being swallowed by it.

Jonah

Jonah came in living in survival mode, unsure he'd ever feel calm again.

We worked to process what happened and help his body learn it was safe.

Today a sudden sound is just a sound. He’s more grounded, less on edge, and able to move through his days without the past calling the shots.

Elena

Elena arrived worn down by everyone's needs but her own.

We focused on boundaries, balance, and setting down the pressure she’d been carrying for years.

Now she cares for the people she loves from a fuller place, and she’s still in there too.

Avery & Sam

Avery and Sam came in frustrated, distant, and tired of the same fight.

We slowed the pattern down, rebuilt their communication, and strengthened how they repair after a hard moment.

Today they handle disagreements as teammates, and they feel close again.

Your North Is Still There

You don't have to keep finding your way by yourself.

There’s a version of these ordinary days where the photo brings a smile, the argument doesn’t spiral, and your own needs make the list. I’ve helped people rediscover their direction and start building a life they want to live in, and I can do the same with you.

Getting started is simple: email or text me, and we’ll set up a free phone consultation to see if we’re a good fit. From there, we’ll start finding your north together.
